Back in the 70s Bill once asked me to attend, as an observer, a seminar he gave at the Bramshill Police College on spying/terrorism. His only instruction was not to wear work clothes. Naturally I wore a very short skirt and very high boots; he had hair down to his waist at the time - slightly longer than mine. I think it is fair to say that I did not look as if I was a member of the fast stream Senior Civil Service training program, but of course I was. I sat at the side of the stage, boots propped up on a convenient chair, observing, and Bill walked out and stared at them.
