Back in the 70s Bill once asked me to attend, as an observer, a seminar he gave at the Bramshill Police College on spying/terrorism. His only instruction was not to wear work clothes. Naturally I wore a very short skirt and very high boots; he had hair down to his waist at the time - slightly longer than mine. I think it is fair to say that I did not look as if I was a member of the fast stream Senior Civil Service training program, but of course I was. I sat at the side of the stage, boots propped up on a convenient chair, observing, and Bill walked out and stared at them. Finally he said: “Gentlemen: you do not have to worry about people who look like me”. Another silence. “You do have to worry about people who look like you.” God knows what Department they thought I was in, but we undoubtedly impressed them on the hazards of judging people from their appearances.
