We intend for the funeral to be a celebration of Bill's life, so you are invited to wear comfortable, colourful clothing (although it's not mandatory)!

Following the funeral service, a wake will be held from 11.30am at the Exeter Brewery, Cowley Bridge Road, EX4 4NX

Note that there is limited parking at the Brewery itself, but there are ample on-street spaces (~£2.60 for 4 hours) as well as several council and private carparks nearby. You can also catch a bus to the area, take a taxi or walk from St David's Railway Station, which is nearby.

If you have any queries about the service or wake, please contact Bill's daughters Amy and Cathy at:

Feel free to share below any memories, photos and/or songs that you associate with Bill (photos and songs may feature at the wake).

Thoughts

I have just learned — on 19 April 2024 — of the passing of Bill last year. I am truly sad. I retired from the Law Faculty in 1998, and I recall Bill as a good friend and colleague. I learned much from him. I sought his company and advice often, and his room was near mine in the Amory Building. I’m a South African and I was active in the African National Congress during a time of great tension, and I recall his admonitions not to sit with my back to the window.

Few people are legends in their own time - Bill was one of them. Immediately likeable, he carried so much gravitas as an academic. I would always look forward to chatting with him at the Cambridge Symposiums because I knew even a five minute conversation would deliver golden nuggets of wisdom. I will miss him and his brightly coloured vests at future symposiums. The Champion of the Thames pub in Cambridge (or "The Champ", as Bill called it) will also never be the same again.

I met Bill in a pub (where else) called The Half Moon in Cheriton Fitzpaine in Devon, over 40 years ago. I was a police officer in the Met, and he made it his project to radicalise me. Over the years our friendship grew deeper, I studied with him at Exeter University on the MA course on Police and Criminal Justice studies. I watched Amy and Cathy grow up, and like such friendships, we thought it would never end. And now he has moved on to a new pub somewhere else. When it is my turn, I know I will meet him there. He will have a pint waiting, and he will say; "...Now as I was saying about Sir Robert Mark..." Rest gently Bill, you were a one-off, I shall always miss you. Until we meet again, old friend.!
