I have just learned — on 19 April 2024 — of the passing of Bill last year. I am truly sad. I retired from the Law Faculty in 1998, and I recall Bill as a good friend and colleague. I learned much from him. I sought his company and advice often, and his room was near mine in the Amory Building. I’m a South African and I was active in the African National Congress during a time of great tension, and I recall his admonitions not to sit with my back to the window.
