i first met Bill when he took a couple of North African masters students who were destined for Cardiff. I dodged the bullet; he didn't. We had a good laugh over it. He enjoyed being controversial, and belonged to an era when eccentricity was more normal than it is today. He loved his subjects of Terrorism and Transnational Policing, and communicated that vitality to others around him, whether or not accompanied by ale.
