I vividly recall the time i first met Bill, early 1970s driving my mini in pouring rain at night in Balsall Heath spotted Bill and Andy O getting soaked despite wearing big black coats (leather, certainly in Andy's case); how they managed to fit in the mini i am not sure, but it was the start of a beautiful friendship.

Later, driving overnight from Brum to Exeter where on arrival he delivered a lecture on a page of a book he had read 3 years before. Genius.

Later still Theo and I parked a camper van in the Politics department car park for days, serving cream teas to anyone who passed by.

And much beer and vodka whenever i had the chance to visit Exeter.
